This event was voted one of the Top Ten Summer Events in Vermont. Proceeds will benefit the Helen Day Art Center. The event takes place at Topnotch Meadow on Route 108.
The Arts and Craft tents are open all weekend and feature the works of many local artists in a variety of media: clay, metal, jewelry, wood, clothing, painting, and sculpture. Get to know the artists that make your unique artwork.
Epicureans will be in heaven on this lovely weekend. On Friday there will be a Celebrity Chef Cooking Contest as well as a Localvore Lunch Day where local farms will prepare menu selections made with locally grown ingredients. Some of the delicious offerings include lamb kabobs, hamburgers, quiche, grilled cheese sandwiches, and organic pizzas.
On Saturday is the Great Vermont BBQ. Local eateries will compete vying for the title of Best Damn BBQ House in Vermont. Local breweries will also be showing off their creations.
Sunday is the “official” Taste of Stowe starting at 11:30am. More than a dozen local chefs will be making some of their specialties for the public to sample. Come early as the food generally runs out by 3:30pm.

The 9th Annual Vermont Kaleidoscope Show takes place Friday, July 16th through Sunday, July 18th. Got Vacation Time-Use it Now

Stowe picked up 1-2" of snow overnight on top of the 1-2" from yesterday, bringing the storm total to 11-18" since Thursday afternoon. It is breezy on the mountain this morning and although winds are forecast to die down today they may effect lift operations early this morning-- we'll keep the report updated of any operational changes as soon as we know any details. We made snow overnight on Lower Standard (half-pipe), Tyro (large terrain park) & Main Street. The grooming fleet smoothed out 46 trails last night, plus two terrain parks & a rail garden with a total of 20 features. Please Note-- Tyro will be closed so our park groomers can begin to build the Large Terrain Park (opening soon). The Sterling and Whirlaway trails are open for advanced skiers/riders only. Today's "Share the Slope" message: Always use devices to prevent runaway equipment. Coming Events: Friday Night there will be a Torchlight Parade and Fireworks display at Spruce Peak. Then on Saturday, we ! will have the charity fundraiser FCS Race for Kids.

The above is from the mountain posting this morning. I skiied and can tell you that it was windy but the sun was bright, skiing was great and improving. With the holidays finished we can enjoy the mountain again with no crowds for a few weeks. Stowe Realty had 68 properties rented for the Christmas Holiday period and we are cleaning lots of homes this morning.

Burlington had the highest total ever recorded in one snow storm within the past two days, 32.6" but the airport never stopped operating and the roads were open.

Winter Update

Hello All:

Winter has finally arrived after a prolonged fall. Today the mountain announced the opening of a number of new trails and will be in full operation by the start of the holidays. We have had about a foot of good wet snow in the village which will allow the mountain to add a good packed base to what they have been making. I have not made the mountain yet but in talking with friends the conditions are very good, although quite windy today. Tomorrow will be the maiden trip for yours truly. Below is a link to the daily report of conditions. We open this page every morning to see what conditions are and which trails have been groomed.

The holidays are coming quickly, rentals are agressive and we have a higher than normal number of properties leased for the week. With over 200 inches of snow before yesterday's weather event, this new storm dumped up to 20 more inches of the good stuff, setting up this weekend to be the best to date. It has snowed for the better part of the last two weeks, but in modest quantities. However, as good as it has been, it just got radically better, thanks to a major storm burying much of the region. It is the final week of the month and everyone around here knows that the skiing and riding in February typically is even better than in January. Hoo boy! There will be some fun stuff on tap this weekend. This week is Winter Rendezvous XXV in Stowe. Saturday the resort will host the “Main Event Championship Series,” a snowboard slopestyle competition with a premium prize purse and U.S. Open spots at stake. Expect great powder skiing and riding to boot!

About the Snow in Stowe
It’s not easy to ignore global concerns about the very real possibility of climate change. But in terms of empirical evidence, this winter here in northern Vermont continues a recent trend of very good, very plentiful snow conditions for skiers and snowboarders over the last decade or so. Snowfall continues to be strong and the numbers from nearby Burlington support these findings as Vermont’s largest city located in the relatively temperate Champlain Valley as received over five feet of snow already with temperature readings about five degrees below normal. Here in Stowe, the average depth of the snowpack on Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak continues to run ahead of the average compiled over the last fifty-five winters. Some winters snow comes in big bursts with intermittent dry spells but this year as was the case last year, snowfall has been very steady. Already better than 220 inches has fallen and past history indi! cates that the snowiest months, February and March, are still ahead. With this week’s just arrived storm the depth of the snowpack should leap well past the 60” mark, which most knowledgeable woods skier & riders regard as the benchmark for full on fun in the hardwood designated glades of Stowe, which have received such acclaim in recent years. As good as things are right now, it is only the continuation of a trend that has seen each of the last eleven winters reach a snowpack depth that exceeds the traditional average on Mansfield. Old-timers like to say, “it doesn’t snow like it used to.” In fact they are correct. It seems to snow more than it used to. Life remains very good in Stowe these days.

Resort Report
Trail Report: Lot’s of new snow! The bump skiing will continue to be some of the best in years. Those cold days with nightly snowfalls do wonders for the mogul lines and Starr, Lookout and Goat are really in great shape. This weekend the bump lines in the Tres Amigos and Lookout Glades should be the best they have been all winter. Nightly grooming continues to set the stage for high-quality cruising with Lord from top to bottom about as good as it gets. Lullaby Lane is always missed yet savvy veterans know that low-angle runs offer sweet snow when many others have been skied hard. It will be impossible to find much to complain about over at the Gondola. Chin Clip will continue to mix relatively steep with pretty deep and that natural snow remains special. The cruisers; Gondolier and Perry Merrill, should be really good and resilient despite the efforts of many to slide them into oblivion. Like to mea! nder? See if you can follow Switchback from its beginning off of upper Gondolier to its always soft conclusion near the base of Chin Clip. Spruce will be very good everywhere and please check out the edge of the treeline alongside the meadows for some very nice soft snow under your skis or board. Upper Spruce will be the best it has been this winter and possibly the rope might drop on the cherished but rarely open Sensation liftline. Whirlaway has been excellent all week and now it is even better.
Snow report: A very good week for skiers and riders to savor snow as it often arrives in Vermont, an inch or two every day. That pattern has given way to a heavy storm which dropped up to 20” onto the slopes of Mansfield by opening time today/Thursday. The reading at the WCAX snow stake alongside the Toll Road rose to 58” on Tuesday night and that number will jump considerably by the time we reach the weekend. The forecast looks rather good. Snow showers Friday and Saturday, a break for some much needed sun on Sunday and then back to snow Sunday night. Gee you might want of call in sick Monday morning.
Snowmaking/Grooming Report:. Most of the tough work is now behind the snowmakers but they were having fun this week burying various pieces of Stowe famous quartet of trails known as the Front Four. Liftline was nailed from top to bottom as well as the traverse line named the Hay Chute serving those double black diamonds. Just for good measure the crew set up a couple of guns at the top of the very steep upper National Headwall just to augment Mother Nature’s efforts. They also blew some snow down onto the 40-degree steep headwall of Starr. The real challenge will be to see if they can take the winch cat over the top just to you know smooth it a bit. Hey everyone in Mountain Ops enjoys a bit of a challenge now and then. Nightly grooming continues on over half the trail system. snow accumulation has been over at Spruce.

Lift Report: During the week the Quad will be the first lift running when it opens at 8 a.m. It opens at 7:30 a.m. on the weekend, the earliest lift operation in the East. The Triple opens at 9:00 and the Lookout double opens as needed. The Gondola is open usually at 8:30 and the Spruce Lifts cycle in beginning at 8:30 a.m with the Easy Street Double. All lifts at Spruce Peak are expected to be in full operation daily. The Tollhouse Double opens at 9 a.m. and the Midway Surface lift will be running this weekend. The Over Easy transfer gondola runs daily from 7:30 a.m. (7:00 on weekends) through at least 5 p.m.

Music on the Mountain
This weekend’s music lineup includes Dan Walker at Spruce Camp and the Detonators at the Den in Mansfield base lodge. The Myra Flynn Band will be performing up at Jose’s in the Midway base lodge and you can catch old favorite Jim Charonko in the Fireside Tavern down at the Inn at the Mountain. Scheduled times for bands are from 2-6 p.m.

Hello from the long lost frozen north. I haven't updated in a while becuase real estate has been very busy, the weather has not been fantastic and the temperatures have been cold.

The morning there was over a foot of fresh powder, it stopped snowing about 2AM after coming down all day, 16 inches at my house and over 20 on top of the MT. Also they had 5 foot drifts on the trails this morning and have worked all morning to groom. Staff just left for the Mt. and it is reported to be awesome.

The forecast for Friday is a LITTLE more snow and than sunny on Saturday & Sunday with high temperatures around 30 each day. If you have the time and flexibility you should be here this weekend.

New Year Arriving With Snowflakes
Regional sages have always said that winter doesn’t really begin in Vermont until after the New Year. Of course those who enjoyed some great powder skiing and riding in late November and throughout much of December will not share that viewpoint. This week fresh snow returned to the mountains and the prospects for the remainder of this holiday week and looking ahead 15 days, are excellent for both fresh snowfall and continued prime snowmaking conditions. The Spruce Peak Plaza is currently a lot of fun as Igloo Building gets underway and Ice Carvers will be unveiling a new ‘Ice Chair’ to commemorate the arrival of 2009. This weekend will also include the showing of another film in the new Mountain Films Series at Spruce Camp. It’s been an eventful season thus far and the best is still to come!

Spruce Peak Growing Lively
Stowe Mountain Resort can trace its history back many decades to the mid 1930’s when skiers arrived by sled and lifts were still a dream of the future. Skiing had rapidly become a social sport where deep friendships developed based on long and arduous climbs up the mountain and adventure-charged descents down difficult, narrow and largely un-groomed trails. Over time the sport grew substantially in numbers of participants. Stowe fast became one of the great centers of skiing and remains so to this day. As great a resort as it was though, Stowe lacked a social and cultural center at the base of the mountains. There were always spots popular with the regulars -- the fireplace at the Den, the deck on the Octagon in the spring and of course the Midway deck on sunny afternoons. But now a new hub is in place, the new Spruce Peak Plaza, with its companions Stowe Mountain Lodge and Spruce Camp. More and more, these facilities are creating a new world at Stowe ! Mountain Resort. From interactive art workshops -- such as the one this Sunday with local mixed media artist Natalie Voght -- to outdoor Igloo Village building, music everyday in the Spruce Camp and open fire pits where hot chocolate and s’mores are often offered, there is a new vibrancy at the mountain. So easily accessed via the Over Easy transfer gondola, anyone can make it to Spruce if the weather has you chilled, the mountain has you tired or you just seek a new experience. Hotel guest, skier, rider or visitor to the town of Stowe, the activities taking place in and around the Plaza or the nearby Spruce Camp have created a new diversion for all.

Mountain Operations Raises the Bar
When the hill is full of skiers and riders and Mother Nature is delivering her usual witches brew of weather, that is when the crews of Mountain Operations are called upon to do their best and most demanding work. A good early season stretch of snowmaking weather allowed Stowe’s snowmakers to bury virtually every trail in the system protected by snowmaking. The acquisition of an additional Pisten Bully allowed the groomers to be able to groom virtually every inch of the main trail system on a nightly basis. As a result, each day skiers and riders have found some pretty good corduroy and a freshly-manicured surface. None of this would have been possible 10 years ago in Stowe. The industry’s development of modern grooming machines boasting a wide variety of sophisticated hydraulic devices, and the tripling of the resort’s ability to deliver fresh snow over the last five years, have given the engineers and artisans of Mountain Operations a whole ar! senal with which to provide high quality snow surfaces for skiers and riders. This week always raises the bar for Mt. Ops., providing a higher volume of guests the best possible product available in the Northeast. So far the report card has been honors grades.

Resort Report
Trail Report: The trail count right now is at 66 but is expected to jump considerably with the arrival of the next storm forecast for the end of the week. Most of the key routes on the hill remain open. Cruising is the operative condition these days although those skiing and riding on Monday found some very soft and fresh snow. Recommended route for most off the top of the Quad is Upper Lord or Ridgeview. Once down to the top of the Lookout Chair there are excellent routes down via Middle Lord or Sunrise. Centerline offers bumps and as you get further down Standard and Tyro remain very good options. Good bumps exist in both the Nosedive Glades and the Tres Amigos Glades but remember it is very challenging skiing or riding in there. Over at the Gondola, Gondolier and Perry Merrill are the preferred routes and super grooming allows both trails to handle a pretty significant volume of traffic. There is a lot of very good skiing and riding to be f! ound over at Spruce and of particular merit is the knowledge that in the afternoon the sun still has been known to shine on much of that trail network. Lower Spruce has coast-to-coast grooming pretty much every night and the West Slope and Slalom Hill sections are both sporting very deep cover. Easy Street and Inspiration are also in good shape. Meadows is worth checking out because it is very quiet on those broad expanses that gave that area its name (Decades back Spruce Peak was actually a highland farm.) Main Street is in very good shape top to bottom. Expect to find Alpine race-training on skier’s/rider’s left in the mid-section but it is open over the entire length of one of the resort’s most scenic trails.
Snow report: A variable week for snowfall but it is ending well. A lively squall brought much-needed freshies to the face of Mansfield and Spruce Peak on Monday night and as much as 6-7” had collected on the lee side of the trails at the Gondola and on Mount Mansfield. Another inch or two fell in short bursts on Tuesday during the day. The forecast for the rest of the week is very promising. The reading at the WCAX snow stake alongside the Toll Road is sitting at 33” after a few days of consolidation in the snowpack. That reading is about normal for this point in the winter according to the 54-year averages kept by the weather service since the stake was installed in 1954.

Snowmaking/Grooming Report:. The snowmakers have been all over the hill this week. Each Christmas week they usually have snow guns in many different locations all over the system, capable of quickly recovering key areas. A priority at Mansfield has been Standard and North Slope and the tower guns have been active along Perry Merrill. There have been guns going on both lower and upper Spruce. Most of the snow is now made for the halfpipe on lower Standard and shaping of the pipe is now underway. Completion of the pipe is probably set for next weekend. Guns will also be blasting snow onto Tyro shortly with a goal of getting the big terrain park built as soon as possible.

Lift Report: All week the Quad will continue as always to be the first lift running. It opens at 7:30 a.m. the earliest lift operation in the East. The Triple opens at 9:00am and the Lookout Double opens as needed. The Gondola is open usually at 8:30 and the Spruce Lifts cycle in beginning at 9 a.m. All lifts at Spruce Peak are expected to be in full operation throughout the holiday week. The Midway Surface lift will be running daily and the Over Easy transfer gondola runs daily from 7:30 a.m. through at least 5 p.m.

Music on the Mountain
The music scene at the resort is really vibrant these days. Spruce Camp is happening for après-ski with Kid Pinky and his Restless Knights the headliners on New Year’s Day. Friday it is the Peter Crag Duo and Saturday enjoy Raphael Groten. The Den’s roster includes Blue on Friday and the always popular Blues for Breakfast band led by Charlie Frazier on Saturday. Both of those acts are scheduled from 2-6pm. Midway offers music on both Friday and Saturday afternoons -- first Brett Hughes and then D.J. Scotty. For a little more mellow gig, try the Fireside to hear Brett Hughes on Saturday afternoon. (You can ski or ride down there at the end of the day but you will need someone to rendezvous with you by car since lift service ends at 4pm.

Excitement at Spruce is Setting the Stage
With the holiday season in full swing it is time for the new Spruce Camp base lodge to strut its stuff. So far it has been awesome. With lots of snow on the hill and a town full of guests Stowe Mountain Resort is thriving with activity. A week that brought a whole lot of snow gave the mountain’s trail network resiliency for both fluctuations in weather and a higher volume of use during this time of the season. For those who enjoy entertainment with their skiing & riding there will be lots of activity on the mountain and in the Spruce Peak Plaza each day of this holiday week. Free skiers and riders will be happy to know that work is underway on the halfpipe that will be built on lower Standard and the Terrain Park on North Slope is completely dialed-in to rave reviews.

Music on the Mountain
There is music in lots of locations throughout this holiday stretch. Spruce Camp will host Chad Hollister on Saturday, Dan Walker on Sunday and Richie Ortiz on Monday, all from 2-6pm. On Tuesday it will be Dwayne Carlton at Spruce Camp. At The Den in Mansfield base, Adam Ezra is on stage on Saturday followed on Sunday by Blue Fox. On Monday it’s Jim Charonko. In Jose’s at Midway base lodge, catch DJ Scotty on Saturday and Adam Ezra moves over there for a Sunday afternoon gig. The Fireside Tavern down at the Inn at the Mountain listen to Brett Hughes on Saturday or Jim Charonko on Sunday. John Wilson, Stowe Mountain Resort’s renaissance “lift-ie” will bring the John Wilson Jazz Duo to the Fireside on Monday. On New Year’s Eve, the Den will host Seth Yacavone, a rocking blues guitarist from 2-6pm while Spruce Camp will present the Dejas. Duncan Blaine will be at the Fireside. Wrapping up the busy week of! music, enjoy Kid Pinky and His Restless Knights at Spruce Camp.

Dining Around Stowe Mountain Resort
There are more and better options than ever for dining mountainside at Stowe Mountain Resort. The Great Room with its five unique food stations at Spruce Camp will certainly be the star of the week but it has lots of companions. The delicatessen area and José's Cantina at Midway have been popular over the years and the Cafe at Mansfield base lodge has a tradition of almost sixty years of refueling hungry skiers and snowboarders. Mountain top dining is also a real treat and the resort has two really choice locations. The Octagon which traces its roots back to 1940 has absolutely stunning views on a clear day and when it is snowing outside, the panoramic windows of the Octagon make you feel right at home in a blizzard. The Cliff House at the top of the Gondola is a Stowe landmark, and its appetizer menu is fast and very tasty. Oh, and the view from there isn’t too shabby either. New for this winter and a bit off the beaten pat! h is the Winter Cottage which in the summer is the meeting place for golf at Stowe Mountain Club. This charming new building is offering a great lunch and après ski menu each day and is just a three minute walk from the Spruce Plaza. This is a great spot for a quiet meal and a hot or cold beverage, away from busy crowds.

Spruce Camp Debut in Full Swing
This holiday week brings to the resort the culmination of a long-cherished dream for Stowe Mountain Resort, the luxury of a new base lodge at Spruce Peak to serve as the base of operations for all the skiers and snowboarders visiting Stowe during this holiday period. It took a year and a half to construct the new Spruce Camp, but the construction period was worth the wait. Opened for Thanksgiving weekend, and now in full operation, the spectacular new building is offering a level of service never before possible at the resort. With a spacious and well-appointed lower level, where rental services, ski and snowboard school desks, expanded retail and skier/rider services are located. The breathtaking main dining floor, titled The Great Room Bar & Grill with its glassed in dining areas and a great lounge for Apres-ski relaxation, completes the scene at Spruce Camp, marking the beginning of a new era at the resort. Convenient to the trails of Spruce Peak and linke! d to nearby Mount Mansfield by the Over Easy gondola, Spruce Camp is easily reached during the day from any location around the resort. It will also be a very nice spot for occasional evening activities. On Tuesday night there will be a slide show and on Wednesday night there will be fireworks celebrating the arrival of the New Year. Each day this holiday week, there will be musical entertainment beginning at 2 p.m. in the lounge area located next to the dining room. Indoor & outdoor fireplaces also compliment this state-of-the-art, architecturally stunning addition to Stowe.

Mountain Reports
Trail Report: The trail count is currently sitting at 82 trails. Most of the key routes on the hill are open. At Mansfield everything served by the Triple Chair is in very good cruising condition. A highlight for most of the winter has been the twin pair of Standard and Tyro. Sunrise has been open since the first weekend. For the crowd looking for steeps, Liftline is in very good shape top to bottom with a mix of manmade and natural snow. Hayride is open with guns going but has plenty of cover. Starr and Goat are on hold for the moment along with Lookout but the next storm should see those routes re-opened. Gondolier and Perry Merrill are in very good shape as well thanks to a lengthy stretch of snowmaking early in the month. Mother Nature’s bounty has also added to the mix. Switchback and Cliff Trail are also in good shape and the latter was extensively manicured this summer to enhance its suitability for grooming. The Toll House trails! are now open and they offer a very quiet venue for new skiers and riders to work on their skills with relatively little activity nearby. Spruce has lots of open terrain from top to bottom. Pretty much all of lower Spruce is open and the Inspiration and Easy Street learning areas are in very good shape. On the upper part of the mountain Upper Main Street is open as well as Sterling. There is still snowmaking work to be done on the mid-section of Main Street. Smuggler’s and Whirlaway should re-open after the next storm.

Snow report: There was a whole lot of snow that fell over the last seven days. It snowed daily for a six day stretch and nearly three feet of the white stuff arrived to bring joy to the hearts of Stowe’s skiers and riders. There were a couple of temperature spikes but all of that snow has left the snowpack in very good shape for this holiday week. The reading at the WCAX snow stake alongside the Toll Road reached a season high of 43” before consolidation settled the pack to its current depth of 39”. That reading is about 7” higher than average for this point in the winter!
Snowmaking/Grooming Report: This week the big target for snowmakers is Hayride, the last of the major routes still receiving manmade cover. Nosedive was absolutely buried with snow coming into this stretch and people were quite entertained by skiing Nosedive with huge “whales” from the guns and more than two feet of fresh powder from Mother Nature. Guns are also doing resurfacing work on North Slope, always the first trail to be covered in the fall and they are hard at work blowing snow on Lower Standard for the halfpipe. The pipe dragon should be able to start cutting the pipe within a few more days.

Snow Pack in Great Shape
There has been a variation in weather over the first five weeks of the season but through it all the snowpack has been steadily increasing in depth. Right now the mountain has better than three feet of natural snowpack and with man-made snow added to most of the key routes the hill will remain in very good shape throughout this next week of lively activity.

Ski and Snowboard School Tips For Parents
This is the busy stretch for ski/snowboard school and most of all for the children’s programs. Here are a couple of tips that can help out;- Pre-register. Space is limited and you can reserve on-line. - Get there early. It is recommended that you arrive a minimum of 30-60 minutes ahead of scheduled program times. This ensures that your kids can be out on the hill with the appropriate group on-time. - Arrange rental gear in advance, pick up any needed gear and arrive at registration with your kids ready to go.

Hello: Skiing today was the best of the year so far. Conditions were excellent, weather was sunny & 10 degrees, little wind and we made a few extra runs before coming to the office. IS EVERYONE READY FOR SOME FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Skiing has been fantastic already this season, I skiied 3 runs this morning before work and it was excellent, about 10 degrees with a little snow falling. At my house, which is about 1 mile as the crow flys from the ski area and at the same elevation as the parking lots, we had 8 inches on Tuesday morning, about 2 on Thursday morning and we are scheduled for 3 significant storms between now and Xmas morning.

First Day of December

Hello:

What great news: Skiing is excellent, lots of man made and I have about 8 inches on my lawn at my house. The mountain reports 24-40 inches of man made with over a foot of natural. I skiied four days last week, the most I have ever skiied in November. In fact the lifts at Spruce Peak were open on Saturday, November 29. I moved to Stowe 40 years ago this month and this is the first time I ever remember Spruce open in November. The temperature for this week is below freezing so the mountain will be pumping out the man made snow and all trails should be wild by the holidays.

The Forecasting a Stowe flurry
Excitement in air as opening nears

STOWE, Vt. - A new connector lift between Mount Mansfield and Spruce Mountain. A spectacular new base lodge scheduled to open this fall as part of a $400 million investment program. A new ski in/out base hotel, and fresh memories of one of the great weather winters in many years.
It would seem, as the first skiers and snowboarders arrive to open the season Saturday, that Stowe Ski Resort would be nothing but bullish on the winter ahead. In fact, that's the case for many locals and longtime Stowe watchers.
Despite the sluggish economy and stories of cutbacks in nearly every facet of life these days, "The buzz is that people here are really kind of optimistic about this season," said Neil Van Dyke, who owns the Golden Eagle Resort.
But questions still hang in the in increasingly frosty air over Mount Mansfield and the post-card village setting here: What if people cut such recreation as skiing and boarding out of their discretionary budgets?
And what if parent company American International Group (AIG), the well-known recipient of an $85 billion government bailout, includes Stowe as an asset to sell off in an effort to repay the bailout?
But again, perhaps buoyed by last season's sensational conditions and the skiing public's enthusiastic response, most Stowe faithful see the glass as half-full.
According to spokesman Jeff Wise, a down economy could actually help areas such as Stowe, because people will more likely pass up a trip west to the Rockies and stay local. Vermont's resorts are within driving time of some 50 million people, many from Canada, where the exchange rate with the US dollar still makes crossing the border an attractive option.
And Wise said that Stowe - about midway through its $400 million improvement program that includes snowmaking, new lifts, hotels, and base lodge facilities - is well-positioned to reap a fair percentage of winter vacationers.
"We have one of the only truly authentic Alpine destinations in the East, and we think people this year will be more ready to come here than fly west," he said.
The authenticity is found in the history of the town and area. Skiing caught on in this country (its popularity spiking after World War II) when Austrian ski instructors who had fought with the US 10th Mountain Division established areas both in the East and on the Rocky Mountains.
"Bend zee knees, 5 dollars please!" was a well-known joke in those years, with reference to the aura of the dashing Tyrolean ski instructors who taught the sport to a generation hungry for new thrills after the decades of depression and war.
One of these was Sepp Ruschp, an Austrian-born ski instructor who came to the states in 1936 at the invitation of the Mount Mansfield Ski Club, and is credited with helping popularize skiing as an instructor both at Stowe and as coach at Norwich University and University of Vermont.
By the 1950s he had turned Mount Mansfield into one of the renowned ski resorts in the country, and certainly the queen of the East. Ruschp brought top competition to the mountain and around the same time was instrumental in getting the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics televised for the first time.
But as Stowe enjoyed status as one of the country's premier ski resorts with its village blossoming around the mountain, Killington was just getting started south of Stowe in 1958 as the sport's popularity ushered in a wave of new resorts
As in later decades, a premium was placed on high-tech snowmaking arsenals and state-of-the-art high-speed lifts, and Stowe slowly slipped from her top gun position. As late as the mid-1980s, one might stand in line a half-hour to ride the painfully slow single-chair lift to the top of Mansfield.
"We lost our status," said Carolyn Ruschp, whose late husband, Peter, was Sepp Ruschp's son. "Other areas saw at Stowe what not to do, and they put massive investments into lifts and snowmaking and grooming. We were left playing catch-up and we're still playing catch-up."
Carolyn, who met her husband when she took ski lessons from him, still owns the motels the couple began in Stowe village. And like most natives and business operators in town, she is optimistic about the season.
"I think most of us feel that instead of going for extended vacations out west, they'd do a long weekend up here. We have the location, and the improvements here have been pretty amazing."
Not that the AIG issue is easily brushed aside, but in the wider scheme of what the company owes, "I think most people consider Stowe a pretty small blip on the AIG asset sheet," said Van Dyke. "But it's a concern. People talk about it. But the weather will have more to do about people coming to Stowe this year than the economy."
Some of the largest improvements obvious to anyone who remembers "the old Stowe" begin with the new upscale hotel and the enormous new base lodge on the Spruce side.
To get from the larger Mount Mansfield side to Spruce, skiers once had to get out of their equipment for a bus ride from one base to the other, an inconvenience at best. Now, a 90-second gondola ride gets the job done, as Spruce Camp has become the new hub of the resort for all guest services.
And while Stowe always cherishes the history of its brand, said Wise, the resort has put much detailed planning into two terrain parks and a halfpipe for boarders and free-ride skiers. Snowboard competition begins next week and will last throughout the season.
"It was at least 10 or 15 years ago that the talk began about improvements on the mountain," says Wise. "There was a lot of permitting to get through. But the new vision really kicked off in 2000 with the Stowe Community Plan. That was the $400 million plan that has produced all the change. We still have plenty left to do."
Of course, whatever the changes on Stowe, like all great ski areas, the terrain is still the terrain. On Stowe, many of the names of the runs and trails resonate through the history of the sport.
The most famous of these are known collectively as the "front four" and have lived to awe and humble skiers of all eras since they were cut a century ago.
Nose Dive, Goat, Starr, and National plunge down off a road midway on Mansfield and still constitute a benchmark in a skier's or rider's progress. Getting down these four with dignity intact gives one a sense of accomplishment.
Other runs on Mansfield, such as Perry Merrill and Standard, are well-worn cruisers that combine undulation with a certain snap that keeps one at attention.
For newer skiers and riders, the Over Easy connection to Spruce - over Route 108, which always stood as the great divide between the two - is most important. Spruce is known for its gentle sweeping terrain and high-speed cruising. The bread-and-butter run, Main Street, even has an automated snowmaking capability that keeps the snow cover refreshed and at times powdery.
So the real importance of the connector is to let groups and families ski at the same resort without being divided on separate peaks.
"Skiing and snowboarding is all about multiple ages," said Wise. "Grandparents can do it with grandkids. Where else do you find a sport that can be done by all generations together at the same time?"

Winter is coming

Hello, It has been a while but winter is coming so figured I better get busy. Prediction that the ground will be white, even in the village tomorrow morning and it sure feels that way.

We will have a new feature this year. I will attach, weekly, a new list of things to do in Stowe every Sunday, unless I am skiing in which case it will not happen until Monday unless the powder is deep and than it will have to wait for Tuesday.

It has been a good summer in Stowe, great weather and the foliage was one of the all time top ten. Business has been brisk, despite the national doom and gloom. We have tripled last years income and the rental market has been explosive, we hardly have enough houses for long term rentals to keep up.

The new Stowe Mountain Lodge is open and is the most beautiful building I have ever walk through, truly a gem! If you want to rent a room for short term stay you can check our web site, www.StoweRealtyRentals.com and we have a few available, all about 30% off the rack rate of the hotel with almost all the same amenities.

Stowe Mountain Lodge Up and Running
Two weeks have now passed since Stowe Mountain Lodge opened its welcoming doors to the public and it is starting to feel like home for the enthusiastic staff. Both Solstice Restaurant and the Hourglass bar have drawn in a fair number of curious locals and by all reports it has been an inspiriting experience. All of the summer attractions are open, highlighted by the Gondola Sky Ride to the Cliff House and the always popular Alpine Sli! de. This weekend on Saturday, the Stowe Garden Festival will focus on Stowe Mountain Lodge with a series of activities designed for encouraging visitors to discover these new amenities. July 4th is just around the corner and that marks the traditional beginning of Stowes peak summer season. There is a lot of interesting activity going on all around town these days. So much to see and do, so little time..

SPRUCE PEAK SUMMER PROJECT
Spruce Peak at Stowe More and more the hotel is starting it feel like it has been there awhile. The landscape details on the entranceway that faces toward Mount Mansfield are settling in nicely and there is virtually nothing left to be completed on the exterior fagade. The pool at the Spa is complete and the kids programs are up and running for hotel guests. The Stowe Mountain Club golf course, an 18-hole course designed by Bob Cupp, is open for hotel guests. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are being served in the Solstice Restaurant, and what better way to enjoy New Englands ! favorite team, the Red Sox, than on the high-definition screen found in the Hourglass bar. This weekend, the hotel will play host to several events that are part of the 16th annual Stowe Garden Festival.

And it Just Keeps Snowing

Woke up this morning to more than 12" at my house and the mountain says 14" on top. There is a snow gauge mounted on top of the mountain and as of two days before Easter it measures over 9 feet of snow.

The phone in the office is ringing off the hook with folks making a last minute decision to get to Stowe this weekend for the annual Easter races and events.

If you enjoy spring skiing steal Tuesday and Wednesday this week away from work. The snow is suppose to stop this afternoon and the temperatures for next week are days in the 40's with nighttime temps in the 20's which makes for outstanding morning skiing. The afternoons will see soft snow.

Also, if you have never visited a Sugar House put that on your schedule of things to do. The sap is running and with the temps of next week it will be a heavy sap run. Boiling will be non-stop and the sweet smell of Maple Syrup will fill the hills. There are numerous Sugar Houses within a one hour drive with 3 or 4 in Stowe. It is something you should do once in your left. Put it on your bucket list.

Another large February snow fall but not as heavy as Valentine's Day 2007. From Wednesday morning until late Thursday we received about 16" with another storm predicted for Saturday night & Sunday of about 8 inches PLUS the weather man is saying a large storm on Tuesday the 12th.

This should set up President's week for great skiing & riding. The weather is suppose to stay in the 20's for that week although that is long range forecasting and doesn't always hold up.

Good Morning!!!. Great snow fall last night. I skiied 4 out of 7 days last week and it was fantastic each day. Here is a link for an on mountain report of happenings and up coming events: Stowe Inside Line [info@stowe.com].

With February's arrival there will only be 8-10 more weeks of skiing. Today, the 2nd, is Woodchuck Day in Vermont, known elsewhere as Groundhog Day. The Vermont Woodchuck says at least 8 more weeks.

President's Week is upcoming and rentals have been strong. The long range weather forecast is plenty of snow in small amounts leading up to the middle of the month and nice temperatures for the balance of the month. We'll see!!!

Come on up to Stowe and enjoy the rest of what has been the best winter for outdoor activities in many years!!!!

Hope everyone is enjoying one of the best holiday weeks weather wise that we have had in many years!! Night temsp in the mid 20's and day temps in the high 30's. Some snow tonight, maybe 3-5" and than the potential of a big storm on Sunday. Crowds are pleantiful, skiing is great and restaurants are booming!

Ring in the new year Monday night at Higher Ground with local, rising-star rockers Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. They're in town for three shows this weekend, but the first two are already sold out. Alt-country heartthrob Lowell Thompson opens on NYE.
Both Potter and Thompson appeared on covers of Seven Days in 2007. Music Editor Dan Bolles went on a 'date' with Potter last August. And former Music Editor Casey Rea profiled Thompson in March.

New Year's
First Night

First Night is a family-friendly way to celebrate the end of the year. On Monday, you can pick from three alcohol-free arts fests in Northern and Central Vermont. They feature a dizzying array of performances -- including, in Burlington, the FOOLZ, a pair of slapstick comics. There's also a fireworks show at 7 p.m. in the Queen City, for the kids -- and adults -- who won't make it until midnight.

Snow Update

Thought I would give you an accounting of the storm of yesterday. At my house, from 3AM Sunday until late Sunday evening we received about 23 inches. The wind blew very hard during the night last night so the total may be more but I shoveled one area at 8AM Sunday and that area had 20" in the path this morning.

Skiing is killer and you need to be here if you want to enjoy. Everything is open, all lifts and trails are in mid season condition and the snowbanks in the village are higher than any time I can remember in the last decade except for last Valentine's Day.

Hope you ahve the opportunity to enjoy Stowe this holiday season and if so please stop in the office and say hello.

Snow Update

Wow!!, Skiied this morning but got there late, about 945AM and thought most of the good stuff would be skiied off BUT was I wrong. It was one of the best days in years, and it started snowing about noon time.

All trails & lifts on the mountain will be opened tomorrow and for the rest of the year we assume with the exception of the Sensation Qud which will open sometime during this up coming mid week in time for next weekend. That means everything will be open for the holidays, something that has been unusual in recent years.

Projection is more snow for parts of 4 of the upcoming seven days but no large dump. That's great and with the temperatures which have been below 30 degrees for most of thed month the company has been making snow non-stop to set up the base for the real stuff.

Will try to update again on Monday. In the meantime if you need a rental for Xmas you better hurry, very limited supply left. Snow Update

Below is an update from the ski area which arrived on my desk about 3PM, Monday.

It's been snowing steadily & heavily at Stowe all day. The storm is projected to last into early Tuesday morning with "significant" accumulations--well over a foot, possibly closer to two feet. What a start to the season! We opened several trails today, and probably a bunch more on Tuesday. You definitely want to be here at Stowe for this first major winter storm of the season! (Want us to write you an excuse slip?) We have 3 rails set up on Ridgeview.

Want to go skiing. Stowe is the place to be. It started snowing about 1AM, Tuesday and by 8AM we had 8 inches at my house which is the same elevation as the parking lots at the ski area. About the same time we had 5 inches in the village at my office, Stowe Realty.

It is predicted that it will snow through Wednesday and total snow fall will be about 14-18 inches which could mean 24-30 on the mountain.

I will post a new photo this afternoon on the front page of our rental web site at www.StoweRealtyRentals.com. If you haven't made reservations for the Xmas holidays yet you should do so soon. We have had about 35 houses rented within the past two weeks and only have a few more options for the holiday. We have talked with a number of Condo complexes this morning and most of them are fully booked.

By the way, the new snowfall is on top of an already much higher than average snowfall for November and skiing has been great since before Thanksgiving.

Skiing Update

I skied this weekend with my 11 year old grand daughter. It was fantastic but by 1030AM the crowds were wild, parking lot full, sunny, about 25 degrees and great skiing. On our web site we will post a photo taken Monday of the mountain and last night, Tuesday night/wednesday morning the mountain received about 8 inches of powder. I couldn't make it to the mountain but a client expressed his opinion by 'Oh Wow!!!'. I will ski tomorrow morning and give you an update.

Crowds are small, weather is cold enough for man made and mother nature has been very good to us so far. I have had to plow the driveway two times so far this year. I plowed the second time in late December last year.

The following information has been reprinted from the Stowe Mountain Resorft newletter. They also annouced that they have received 6-10" of natural snow this week and snowmaking has been on all week with temps in the 20's each night. They plan to open on November 21 or earlier. Temperature forecasts for the rest of the month seem favorable for continued snowmaking.

Skiing should start about the 17th, weather is turning cold and snow making has begun so the mountain should open on time. Hope you are planning to enjoy Stowe during the early season skiing which generally is some of the finest, certainly the warmest until March and usually not crowded.

During the winter I will try to post at least every other day and let you know what conditions are like as I ski at least 4 mornings a week, sometimes more.

WOW!!! Was foliage great!! BUT it was two weeks late. The town was almost full this past weekend and those that here got a treat with super color and temperatures in the high 60's.

Today is 75 degrees.

What to do now that foliage is winding down and skiing will not open until Nov. 21, Mother Nature cooperating. Well for this week we have the Fall Ghost Stories & History, a wlaking tour under candle light of the Historic Stowe village & buildings with sotries about the early settlers. OCTOBERFEST:

Stowe's 11th annual Octoberfest gets underway at 10AM, Saturday, Sept. 29 with a parade through the village over to the Jackson Ice Arena which will be transformed into a Babarian Village. At 11AM Burgermeister Ken Schumann will "tap" his 11th consecutive Stowe Rotary Octoberfest Keg" and the weekend will be underway. In addition to lots of outstanding food & music there is a Silent Auction & Raffle, Children's Activities, Oompah Bands, Dancing & FUN!!!

All the money raised is for scholarships to local students for college and awards to local non-profit organizations. In 2006 that totaled about $70,000.00

British Invasion

Antique Car Parade this weekend

This weekend is the 50th annual Stowe Antique Car Parade & Rally. The cars will begin arriving Thursday, gather at Nichols Field Friday and hold the parade Saturday. Over 1000 cars will be in the parade including (apparently) the car Ed Sachs raced from the pole in the 1961 Indy 500 and in which he finished 2nd. Rumor says a 1962 car that AJ Foyt raced at Indy will also be present but I am not sure.

On Sunday all the cars are lined up by class at Nichols Field at 9AM for judging and about 1-2PM the winner of Best of Show will be announced and displayed.

If you have ever liked looking at old cars you need to be in Stowe on Saturday & Sunday.

Stowe's Famous Recreation Path

Here in Stowe, it's known simply as "The Rec Path" and if you haven't explored it yet you will want to put it on your list of things to do in any season. The nearly six mile path starts out above Top Notch and continues through woods and farm fields, eventually crossing the Mountain Road and beyond until it ends behind the church in Stowe Village.

There are plenty of Stowe businesses along the way, including Gracie's Restaurant and the Rusty Nail, where you can enjoy lunch or dinner before finishing your stroll or bike ride.

My most recent trip along the path started at the top, where I was dropped off and ended at the Main Street Market & Deli, where I enjoyed a delicious homemade muffin and a cup of steaming coffee as my reward.

Dogs are allowed, as are bikes, which are easily rented at several locations in Stowe.

Fed Cup Update

The weekend of July 14-15 is the Fed Cup. Stowe is buzzing, tennis stadium is about finished, all tickets are sold out but some are available through eBay plus some hotel packages are still available.

Even if you don't have tickets to the matches it will be a great weekend to be in Stowe, lots of events surrounding the tournament. Also many volunteers are needed to make this work and you can volunteer and likely get to see some tennis. A Stowe Vacation Story from the O'Connells of Ivyland, PA - Guests at Ginger House during the now famous Valentine's Day Storm of 2007.

We'd like to tell you about the best vacation ever. Of course, it was in Stowe. We came the second week of February 2007 to enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing. We went to Trapp and skied through some of the most beautiful woodland scenes we could have imagined. We snowshoed the Recreation Path, all 5.5 miles of it.

Then, we were lucky enough to be snowed in on Valentine's Day in a romantic log cabin. That was the day of the blizzard, the second largest snowfall in Stowe history!! You can bet we'll be back for more next year!

Several of the world's finest women's tennis players will put their skills on display in Vermont when the United States and Russia compete in a Federation Cup semifinal at Topnotch Resort and Spa in Stowe on July 14-15. The United States Tennis Association made the announcement Tuesday, marking the return of elite tennis to Stowe for the first time since the 1980s, when the Head Classic men's tournament brought such stars as Jimmy Connors, Ille Nastase and Ivan Lendl to the Green Mountains. The competition's rosters could include Venus and Serena Williams and reigning U.S. Open champion Maria Sharapova.

This is a major event which will set the tone for the summer. Rooms will go fast so don't wait.

End of Ski Season

The Stowe Mountain Resort confirmed this afternoon that Sunday the 29th of April will be the last day for the lifts to run. Snow is still deep on the mountain but with about 5 days over 50 of which two exceeded 75 degrees this week the snow is melting quickly. The forecast for this weekend is cloudy with few showers and temps in the high 50's to low 60's. This means early morning will be the best time to ski and ride, unless you like real soft snow.
Either way skiing should be excellent early each day. this past weekend it was OUTSTANDING. I skiied Thursday, Friday & Sunday and each day just got better.
At this time the golf course is scheduled to open May 5. The time between seasons this year will be short as it should be. Golf in the early part of the year is great, no one on the course so you can try a redo if you wish most of the time.

Spring has Sprung

Well, spring has finally arrived. Skiing still great, made 6 runs Thursday & 4 Friday. Need to get there early before the sun hits it hard. Temperatures at 8AM was 38 and at noon it is 71. Mountain will close on or after the 29th of April. At this time there is more snow at this late date than I have seen in 20+ years. The entire mountain could be operating if the business was here.

We are in the middle of a week of perfect sugaring weather. Cold nights & warm days make the sap run and it is great now and pedicted to stay this way for most of the upcoming week.
We have the New England Regional Conferece in Stowe starting Sunday until Tuesday. I could not have asked for better weather for the visitors. About 200 will enjoy a reception with Elisabeth Von Trapp starting the conference off with 45 minutes of great music.
Hope you have had the opportunity to enjoy Stowe is winter. If not consider visiting one of the most beautiful spots on earth this summer. When summer is high activities abound and we all enjoy Camp Stowe.

In keeping with the habit of major snow storms on holidays this year, as of 7AM Stowe had 12-18 inches on the mountain, about 15 inches at my house and snowing hard. This is set up spring skiing to well after Easter. Plan to spend Easter in Stowe.
I haven't updated in a few days as i am in Buffalo watching the NCAA tournament. Saw Duke lose on Thursday night and will watch Pitt against VCU this PM. I have a 27-5 record in the first round and have Pitt, Ohio St., Florida & Georgetown in the final four with Florida beating Ohio St in the finals.

Spring Skiing & Riding

Only 40 degrees today with a little coudy on top but what a fantastic day of skiing. Still 84 inches of snow at the gauge on top of the mountain and big crowds for this time of year.
If you enjoy good skiing get to Stowe in the next 3-4 weeks. Tomorrow is perdicted to be sunny & in the 40's so we will enjoy.

Spring is coming, Maple Syrup can not be far behind

Today is cold but predicted to be the last really cold night of the year. They are saying record lows tonight which means below -25.
Starting tomorrow morning we have a warming trend and Saturday night will be in the 20's with sundays temps in the 40's. This will likely start the sap run and the forecast through all of next week is similiar. That means boiling will start in the sugar houses and skiing will start towards spring skiing. That is an awesome combination and with the amount of snow we have the Stowe Sugar Slalom race, to be held April 7 & 8, will be one of the best in years as long as it is a sunny day.

Time to Catch Up

Sorry for not updating for a few days. I went on a business trip out of state and couldn't remember my password. Old age apparently catching up.
Got back on Monday and the weather has been so great I went skiing. Last 3 days, Sunny, temps in the 30's and snow conditions best in years. Forecast for a foot or more starting tonight and lasting through Friday late afternoon.

Spring Skiing, Summer Plans & Maple Syrup

Skied 10 runs today, weather was great, about 27 degrees and overcast. The sun will be with us tomorrow and 35 degrees.
Talk in the air about maple sap run which all the farmers are getting ready for. They are in their sugar woods making sure the taps and lines did not get damaged during the storms last week. Give us about 3 days of 40 degree weather and it will start running. Could be within the next week but likely will be the middle to end of March.
If you have never visited a syrup making operation you should put it on your list of things to do. If you want suggestions of where to visit give me a shout out.
Its not to early to start to think about summer vacation in Stowe. If you want to rent for a month or two, which many people do, please plan ahead and give us a call or email.

Suggestions for quick dinner

Today I am going to give you a break from the snow forecast except to tell you that it has been snowing hard since day break and it will probably be 5-7 inches on the mountain before dark.
Last night a group from the office went to the Lucky King Chinese Restaurant which is located in the Baggy Knee's Shopping Center. They feature a great buffet which for the adults was $8.95, all you can eat. Yound kids eat for $.80 per year of age. Our two year old ate enough for most adults for $1.60. If you want a quick dinner give it a try. They also feature a buffet at lunch for $5.95, all you can eat.
The phone is still busy. Getting a significant number of rental bookings for March when the temperatures are generally warmer, snow will be excellent and crowds will be reduced. If you live within 8-10 hrs driving time you should be here the first week of March.

Below is the snow report issued today from the mountain. You notice that they say 5 feet of new snow this week. I can tell you from experience that they are correct. It is wild and fantastic skiing & riding. Went snowshoeing this morning and even with snowshoes the snow was over my knees.

Stowe Mountain Rescue has issued an advisory that anybody considering travel in the backcountry should be alert to extemely high avalanche danger, due to the recent heavy snowfall. With continued cold temperatures forecast, it is expected these conditions will continue through the weekend into next week. Welcome to the Presidents Day Holiday Week at Stowe Mountain Resort! And we welcome everyone to our two incredible mountains - Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak. Our slopes have been covered with incredible amounts of snow over the last month, about FIVE FEET of which has fallen just this week! Welcome to the best conditions of the year at the Skiing and Riding Capital of the East - Stowe! Make sure to check out the great base lodge entertainers, and be at Midway Lodge Saturday night at 7pm for Torchlight Parade & Fireworks. Storm of a Life time

Would you believe over 40 inches in 24 hours? The Governor stated this morning that this apparently is the largest snowfall in one 24 hour period in Vermont's history.

Lots of calls today from President Week's vacationers asking if the roads are passable. YES they are and with another 24 hours of work they will be excellent. The only suggestion is be careful on city streets as cars coming out of parking lots can not see around the snowbanks and may surprise you as you drive by.
Stowe Mountain Resort has issue an avalanche warning for the back country which is the first time I have ever seen that. The last time I can recall a storm larger than this is the winter of 1968-69 and again in 1969-70 BUT those storms were over 3-5 days. This all came down from 4AM Wednesday until 1AM today. The walkway at my office in the village is over my waist and I am 6 foot tall.
Skiing, riding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling will be the best in years over the next few weeks AND GUESS WHAT, the long range forecast says we are going to have another Northeaster coming on Friday next week, the 23rd.

Snow Forecasted for Holiday Weekend

THREE FEET IN THE VILLAGE AND FOUR FEET ON THE MOUNTAIN!!!!
That is the forcast this morning for a storm to begin tomorrow, Wednesday about 3AM and finishing about noon on Thursday. The forecaster said he might be off by 6 inches which means we will receive the best snow fall we have received in one storm since 1993.
This will set up the holiday week which begins on Saturday for the most outstanding skiing and riding that we have had in years. The public seems to be aware of it as our rental division had four calls yesterday for rentals beginning Saturday, talk about last minute shopping.
Come to Stowe and have fun this week. All the Stowe Mt. Resort ski shops will be having sales also during the week.

Stowe Weekend of Hope

May 4-6, 2007 is the Stowe Weekend of Hope which is a celebration of life & learning for cancer survivors and those who love them.
This is year seven(7) that Stowe has hosted this outstanding event. The weekend provides of 30 medical talks & workshops on the latest research in the field, wellness sessions, intensive workshop by cancer type, an inspirational candlelight servce, opening & closing ceremonies featuring will known cancer advocates and the beautiful surroundings of Stowe for shopping, recreation and sightseeing. Stowe provides somplimentary acommodations for first time attendees & discounted accomdations for returning participants. Last year it attracted over 1000 visitors.

Snow & more snow

I had to travel to Brandon, Vermont this morning to show an Inn & Restaurant to a client. Left Stowe with about 5-6 inches of fresh snow overnight and drove in sunshine for the first hour but the last 45 minutes was in snow flurries. Trip back was on snow covered back roads over the mountain into the Sugarbush Valley area of Vermont and than back North to Stowe. Once back here I had to wash the car and get ready for more snow tonight and tomorrow morning, than turning cold for two days. End of the week should be outstanding.
I will ski tomorrow, Sunday, morning and will post conditions but if you look at the comments of SkiSheba attached to my post about the special pricing at the mountain yesterday you will see that she (I assume it is a female by the name although I don't know who it is) took advantage of the ticket pricing and had a grand time with outstanding conditions and temperatures in the high 20's.

Wow, what a week!!!

It started snowing Wed. night & has barely stopped since, total of 13-16"! Breaks down like this: 4-6" by early yesterday morning, 3-4" during the day yesterday, at least 6" more overnight! Powder Day! Come and get it!
That was the ski report this morning on the website of Stowe Mountain Resort. It was windy and temperatures were only 8 degrees BUT on a day with over a foot of new powder you got to go and I did. Wow, what wonderful skiing and what great conditions for the upcoming vacation week.
If you are wondering if you should come to ski during vacation week by all means set asdie whatever you think can wait and come on up, It is as good as it gets right now.
Not able to update the last couple of days as I was in meetings on the road Wed & Thur but things on the hill have been improving every day with 3-4 inches each day. Yesterday morning I had about 6-7 inches at my house, more during the day and an extra four inches this morning.

Vermont Governor Vetoes Punxsutawney Phil's Forecast Says Vermont Woodchucks Confirm 12 More Weeks of Winter Wonder
Vermonters Celebrate 'Woodchuck Day'
Montpelier, Vt.-Governor Jim Douglas today said his state is vetoing the findings of Punxsutawney Pennsylvania's most famous resident Punxsutawney Phil, an alleged "groundhog" masquerading as a meteorologist.
Reports from Pennsylvania suggest Phil has forecast an early spring, but Vermont begs to differ.
"First, everyone knows that 'groundhogs' are really woodchucks, so I don't know who Phil's fooling," the Governor said. "But more troubling is his prediction for an early spring.
"Our woodchucks know winter," Douglas continued. "And they've confirmed that it will last well into April. We've received a great deal of snow in the last few weeks, with more in the forecast. Now's the time to come on up and enjoy our legendary skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and the many inns, bed and breakfasts and resorts that make Vermont a winter wonderland."
In an elaborate ceremony hosted by The Radio Vermont Group this morning in Waterbury, Vermont, many of the state's woodchucks assembled to confirm winter, at least in Vermont, would last 12 more, snowy weeks.
Asked to comment on Vermont's celebration of Woodchuck Day, Punxsutawney's official Groundhog Day Coordinator Michelle Neal said, "We thought of it first, so Vermonters can bug off."
In a response typical of the state's well-known acerbic wit, Vermonters have designated an official reply to a "Happy Woodchuck Day" salutation. When wished a "Happy Woodchuck Day" Vermonters answer, "bug off."
Much like the Bill Murray gem 'Groundhog Day,' Vermont will be repeatedly waking up to prime winter weather well into April.
Punxsutawney Phil couldn't be reached for comment. However, several locals speaking on the condition of anonymity said, true to his squirrelly roots, he was last seen heading to the snow-covered mountains of Vermont on his snowmobile-packed with his skis, snowboard and snowshoes.
"Well, maybe he didn't see his shadow on Gobbler's Knob, but he's apparently on his way to Vermont to enjoy an extraordinary winter vacation," Governor Douglas said.

Update from the Mountain

Below is the update directly from the mountain which is published two times a day. I copied this one and pasted it in as I was not able to get to the mountain today. Weather is Sunny, about 27 degrees and I was able to wash the car today for the first time and a couple of weeks.
Two-four inches of snow overnight, & it's snowing lightly this morning with additional light accumulations forecasted. The snowy weather should continue off and on for the next few days, with a chance for snow or flurries each day right through the weekend. Surfaces all over the resort should get a nice freshening up with the new snow, making our already great packed powder surfaces that much better! Snowmaking operations continue as we build bases up for the long haul into spring. We'll make snow again tonight on upper Lord and Ridge View on Mount Mansfield.

Good Day from Stowe

Weather is sunny & bright but still about 10 degrees at noon time. A little snow is forecasted for Friday & Saturday evenings which will be good for the trails. Some of the trails are getting polished and could use some good snow.
The weather is suppose to warm over the weekend but get cold again next week. We will ski as much as possible and keep you posted.
It will be time soon to think about your summer vacation plans. If you ahve not experienced Stowe in the summer you should think about that option. Stowe does the majority of it's income in the non-winter months and something is going on in Stowe almost every weekend during the warm months. Within the next few days we will have part of the summer calendar on this site.

Woodchuck Day

Friday, Feb 2 is the celebration of the first annual Woodchuck Day in Vermont. Nationally it is known as Groundhog Day but if you look up the definition of Gorundhog it reads "Woodchuck".
Vermonters have been known as Woodchucks for years and are proud of it. As part of the celebration the Stowe Mountain Resort will be selling lift tickets for the day at $35.00.
Skiing has been excellent from the ankles down but cold but the neck up. The forecast is for a warming trend starting tomorrow, Tuesday with some light snow fall this weekend. Come and enjoy the start of the 2nd half of what is turning out to be a great skiing and riding season although it started very late.

Upcoming Holiday

Boy, winter started late but it has come with full fury. With the amount of snow we have received in the past two weeks conditions are outstanding. Yesterday was about 30 degrees, sunny and one of those days you live for.
The forecast for the next couple of weeks continues to indicate great snow making weather and a few storms. This bodes well for the President's Week vacation and our phones in the rental division indicates that people are looking forward to being in Stowe for some great skiing & riding.

Whata beautiful day!!

Sunny and about 17 degrees has made for a beautiful day on the mountain and in Stowe in general. In addition, Winter Carnival is in full swing and I will attempt to attach some of the 15 photos I took yesterday of the ice sculptures. Most are truly awesome.
President's week promises to be very busy. Our rental division has been getting numerous calls each day and it doesn't seem to let up which is great. If you want to come to Stowe for President's Week I suggest you plan soon. Ken Libby

Snow Exceeds Predictions

I wrote yesterday that the forecast was for 7-10 inches and maybe as much as 15. Since noon yesterday I have received in excess of 12 inches at my house and another 5-6 is predicted ending late tonight.
The forecast for the next 5 days is Sunny each day with normal temperatures. This will make for OUTSTANDING skiing & riding during Winter Carnival week which started yeaterday.

Snowing hard in Stowe, Winter Carnival starts today

It is snowing hard, perdicitions for significant snow fall between Friday morning & Saturday after dark, some say 8-10 inches and somw say maybe 15 inches, depending upon the storm track.
Winter Carnival starts today for 9 days and skiing will be outstanding. The temperature is in the 20's, and suppose to stay low enough all week to keep the ice carvings frozen, snow making working and skiing outstanding. Stowe as it is meant to be

The weather is everything Stowe wants. Great snow fall the last two days, total at my house about 6-7 inches, more on the mountain. Temperatures at 5PM about 15 degrees with the forecast not to reach 30 for the rest of the month. That means the powder makers on the mountain will be hard at work every night this month. Conditions for the Stowe Winter Carnival, which starts on Jan 19th for a weekm will be among the best in years for the on hill activites and also for the ice carvings which are always such a hit.
Also, with the weather we should see some excellent skiing & riding for President's week in February. Calling In Stuck...

Have you been saving up your sick days? Because, it's here, it's here, it's here! The snow is falling and it's predicted to stay cold for the remainder of the winter! The ski season we've been waiting for has finally started. (I feel like a kid at Christmas, can you tell?!)
I predict a lot of "calling in sick" tomorrow.If that doesn't work, there's always "calling in stuck" due to weather.
Met a guy on the chairlift who drove up from Mt. Snow yesterday morning. When I asked whether he was from that area he told me "heck no, I live in New York, but when I looked out the window at my bed & breakfast and saw it was raining, I packed everything up, jumped in the car and drove up here." Now that's the spirit!

Thinking about Bringing Fido to Stowe? Most of the Rental Agencies have an inventory of dog friendly properties. There's no better place for activities to do with your dog either. The famous Stowe Recreation Path allows dogs and even provides "clean up stations" at the parking areas. Ski Guru Picks Stowe for Night Life

Confirming what we've known all along, Boston Globe's Ski Guru, Ethan Binns, has just named Stowe the Best New England Ski Resort for Night Life.
One fabulous place Binns didn't mention is Stowe's Blue Moon Cafe. Ask the owner, Jim Barton, to suggest a great bottle of wine to go with your meal. He's always got the inside line on something we haven't tried. The Blue Moon's menu changes weekly, so check it out online before you go. They're open seven days a week, so if you're on vacation, pick a mid-week night and book it for late so you can linger over your meal. We'd also suggest you make a reservation. If they're "fully committed" ask about eating at the bar, where their bartender, Veronica will make you feel right at home. I'm hungry just thinking about it...

A Day We Live For

December 29th skied 13 runs, sunny all day, not a cloud int the sky, one of the types of day we live for. Skiing was excellent, more trails opened, skied top of Hayride a number of times.
December 30, it started snowing hard about 630AM, 5 inches in the parking lot of my office in the village by noon and still coming. Sunday the 31st supposed to be sunny, skiing should be wild.

Skied 5 Runs This Morning!

Thursday 12/28, Skied 5 runs this morning, fresh snow, about 5 - 6 inches from 7am to 10am. Skiing was very good, limited number of trails with more opening on the 29th. Crowd was close to what you would expect for Xmas Holiday. Firday to be Sunny all day and more snow expected this weekend or Monday. Stowe Realty Rentals has rental properties available on short notice. Had two sets of guests this afternoon who decided to drive in for New Years after hearing abou the snow fall of the last few days!
